Leave Request
West End Primary School values regular attendance and promotes this through a variety of approaches.
More information on these approaches can be found in our Attendance policy that can be found in the policies section of this website.
With reference to leave requests parents must consider the following information:
Within the Education (Pupil Registration) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2013 it states
“The amendments to the 2006 regulations remove references to family holiday and extended leave as well as the statutory threshold of ten school days. The amendments make clear that headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. Headteachers should determine the number of school days a child can be away from school if the leave is granted.”
Guidance for Headteachers states that
"Headteachers have the discretion to grant leave, but they should only do so in exceptional circumstances. If a headteacher grants a leave request, it will be for them to determine the length of time that the child can be away from school. This leave is unlikely, however, to be granted for the purposes of a family holiday.”
At West End Primary School all applications for leave are considered on a case by case basis. The decision to authorise leave is the Headteacher's only. Any request for leave must be made in advance and cannot be granted retrospectively. All requests for leave must be made via the completion of the Leave Request Form (click to download).
Use of Penalty Notices
West End Primary School will request that the local authority issue penalty notices in respect of unauthorised absence. This includes leave of absence which is taken without a prior request being made; and leave taken after a prior request has been made and parents have been informed that the period of absence would be classed as unauthorised but the leave is taken regardless of this advice. West End Primary School will also request that the local authority issue a penalty notice for days taken in excess of the agreed period of leave; without good reason.
